Sleep Apnea Inspire Therapy

Inspire Sleep Apnea Treatment

What's Obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that occurs when the muscles at the back of your throat, specifically the soft palate and tongue, are temporarily relaxed while you're asleep. When the muscles relax, the airway is constricted or narrowed, which causes the breath to stop for a short period in sleep.

If not treated, OSA increases your risk of developing various serious illnesses, such as high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, irregular heartbeats, dementia, and diabetes type 2.

An Implantable, no-mask treatment option

CPAP A bedside pump is used to push an airstream into an air mask to ensure that the airway remains open when a person is asleep for a long time, the standard therapy for OSA.

Many people have trouble making it easy to make the CPAP Mask comfortable and comfortable for wearing, hearing night-time background noise from the machine, or reaping the benefits of the treatment.

Research indicates that just 60 percent of patients use CPAP according to the prescription.

Inspire is a solution that doesn't require a mask. It uses implantable technology (similar to the pacemaker) to keep track of each breath you take. Then depending on your breathing patterns, it sends gentle stimulation to the muscle located at the rear of the throat.

By stimulating these muscles, the system ensures that your airway stays open throughout sleep. With a handheld remote, you can switch the device on before bed and then shut it off after you awake. It's as straightforward to utilize.

Benefits of the Inspire Treatment

Inspire therapy is exceptionally effective. In October 2020, there were nearly 100 peer-reviewed studies about Inspire therapy. These papers demonstrate that patients who use Inspire therapy reap substantial advantages:

  • A 79% decrease in sleep apnea-related events results in a more healthy and restful night's sleep.

  • 94% of customers are pleased with Inspire

  • Ninety-six percent of users believe Inspire is superior to CPAP. They would suggest Inspiring other patients.

  • Snoring has decreased, With 90% of bed partners reporting that they do not experience sleeping or just soft snoring.

  • Better daytime performance due to improved sleep

Patients who are candidates for the Inspire Treatment

Inspire is a second-line treatment for those who cannot take or do not benefit from CPAP and in the absence of other effective options. You may be a suitable Inspire candidate if:

  • Its AHI (apnea-hypopnea index) is between 15 to 65 (moderate-to-severe)

  • You're not overweight. That is the body mass index of your not higher than 35.

If you meet these requirements for eligibility, the doctor will confirm that Inspire therapy is suitable for you through an airway exam and sleep endoscopy. This exam will examine your airway when you're under conscious sedation.

What to Expect from Inspire Treatment

You'll go through a minimally invasive in-office procedure if you're eligible for this procedure. Your doctor will insert the Inspire device under the neck's skin and chest with two minor cuts within an outpatient environment. Patients return home the next day without restriction on their diet.

About one month after the surgery, you'll see the system activate your doctor. The following 10 to 12 weeks later, you'll go through an annual sleep study to adjust the device to suit your breathing patterns.

General checks will be scheduled at least once a year. After the implant, the Inspire battery will last for life. A simple swap-out procedure for replacing the battery will be required approximately every 10 years.
