Abstract

Fiberoptic bronchoscopy at the bedside is an essential tool for treating and diagnosing various respiratory ailments in critically ill patients. The fiberoptic bronchoscope enables the direct inspection of the airways, which aids in the identification of malignant and benign airway lesions. Furthermore, the pulmonary secretions and tissue samples are collected with the bronchoscope and methods that permit sampling of lower airways, with little or no contamination of the upper airways.

The collection of lower airway samples is essential in diagnosing pulmonary infiltrates in immunocompromised patients, in many patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia, and selected patients with CAP.

The fiberoptic bronchoscope is employed for therapeutic procedures, including the placement of an endotracheal tubing, the removal of an expelled foreign object clearing of tenacious secretions, enhancement of hemostasis for patients suffering from hemoptysis, and instillation of medication as well as assistance with the installation of prostheses for the tracheobronchial (i.e., airway stents).

Suppose the proper training and preparation are carried out, and the patient is observed during the procedure. In that case, fiberoptic bronchoscopy can be done swiftly and comfortably at the bedside for most seriously ill patients.
